What Makes a Photo a Good Studio Portrait?
During this portrait photography course, we’ll definitely dive into the essentials.
We kick off by exploring camera settings and how studio flashes work—what is flash synchronization, which ISO should you use, and more. But the real magic happens with the lighting: we’ll compare hard light and soft light, and discover the similarities and differences between natural light and studio light.
We’ll also chat about color temperature, low-key and high-key lighting, and the direction from which the light should hit.
In our first lesson, we’ll cover all this and more. For our initial flash photos, we’ll work with a mannequin named D80, capturing all the different lighting styles.
You can use these shots later as a visual reference to grasp the nuances between hard and soft light. In the following weeks, we’ll review the photos and have two evenings of hands-on work with a model.
We’ll create lighting setups for high-key and low-key photography, applying what you’ve learned with a model. The best part? You’ll have already mastered the camera settings and flash arrangements, so you can really focus on nailing your composition and connecting with your subject.
